… or just eating what you want instead of choosing the ‘healthier’ option?

There was a time when I was struggling with my relationship with food and I’d go for whatever had less calories because I wanted to lose weight.

I was stuck in binge- diet cycle for over a decade and now, looking back after recovering, I can see how much I missed out on because of that.

Looking back, I can also see how choosing ‘better’ and ‘healthier’ option led to binge episodes later on. Because that’s what restricting does. It catches up on you.

Every summer since my recovery, I enjoy ice cream and I don’t see ‘empty calories’ or sugar anymore. I see sun, friends, fun, enjoyment, freedom.

So, have that damn ice cream, yes, you can💛

Restricting on food is never ‘healthy’. It might feel like that, but it’s just a short term win.

Restricting usually leads to bingeing episodes which are definitely more harmful than the food you didn’t allow yourself to have.

35-41% of patients with an ED experience relapse. Officially but tbh I think that number might be higher…

As someone who recovered from bulimia, I experienced binge urges 10 (!) years after my recovery.

Does it mean that I haven’t recovered properly? No.
Does it mean I’ve done something wrong? No.
Does it mean I’ve failed? No.

It just means that my brain remembered what we used to do and reminded me about that. I didn’t follow up on these urges but even if I did, it would have been a very valuable lesson for me, not a failure.

Just wanted to share that in case you’re experiencing tougher times. It’s normal and it will pass 🫶
